James Washington Sutherland

Samuel and Nancy Hendricks Sutherland had two sons they were Moses Timothy Sutherland and my Great Grandfather James Washington "Jim Wash" Sutherland. Jim Wash was born on December 31st 1851 in Pickens County, South Carolina. He married Lutena Prince and they had a son George Washington Sutherland, I have very little information on this marriage. As a very young man he served in the military as a Private in Rutledge's Company, 4th Regiment South Carolina Calvary, Company C, and after the Civil War was over he moved to Gilmer County, Georgia with his brother Moses and lived on a farm adjoining the one Moses lived on but later moved back home to Pickens County, South Carolina. He then married my Great Grandmother

Leila E. Riggins (who was 30 yrs his junior) in about 1899 and raised five children with her. Jim Wash farmed in and around the Pumpkintown Community and also lived in Liberty, South Carolina. Jim Wash died at the age of 75 on Jan 1st 1926 in Pickens County, South Carolina and was buried at New Mountain Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Pickens County, South Carolina. Leila lived another 23 years and died at age 67 on December 28th 1949, 3 days short of what would have been Jim Wash’s 98th birthday. Leila is buried next to Jim at New Mountain Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Pickens County.

Moses Timothy Sutherland

Sam and Nancy Sutherlands oldest son Moses Timothy Sutherland was born on March 7th 1847 in Pickens County, South Carolina.
On November 29th 1863 Moses volunteered for service with the Confederate Army, and at the age of 16 he mustered in as a Private with Company H, 2nd Regiment of the South Carolina Infantry Rifles.
All during the Civil War Moses claimed he could not read or write, during this time Moses also added an “O” to change the spelling of the name Sutherland to Southerland and continued to use this spelling the remainder of his life, all of this was done as a protective measure for his family “to make it hard for the Yanks to find them” in case he was ever captured during the war.

After the war was over Moses loaded his family and belongings into a wagon and left Pickens County. Moses finally stopped and ended up settling in Georgia. He bought a farm in the Leeches District of Gilmer County, and in 1894 became the Minister of Flat Creek Baptist Church in Gilmer County, Georgia. He was blind the last few years of his life and for this reason he lived with his daughter Savannah Ralston. Moses died on May 6th 1932 at the home of his daughter and was buried at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery in Gilmer County, Georgia.

Robert Grady Sutherland

Jim Wash and Leila Sutherland’s son Robert Grady Sutherland was my Granddaddy. He was born on May 30th 1914 in Pickens County, South Carolina. He married my Grandma Leila Lee Simmons (she is the daughter of Clarence Orr Simmons and Julia Lee Durham) sometime around 1933 in Easley, South Carolina. They had four children including my Dad.
Grady joined the US Air Force where he was a Staff Sergeant and a Cook, He also served during the Korean War, in December 1952 a radio interview with my Granddaddy “Grady” was broadcast in his hometown of Easley, South Carolina, in the interview he mostly thanked everyone who had donated supplies for them to prepare Christmas dinner for the troops fighting the Korean War. A copy of this interview on LP record was sent to my Grandma by the radio station, this LP was later lost in a house fire.
Grandma didn’t want to leave South Carolina so their marriage ended in divorce. Granddad retired from the US Air Force in Clovis, New Mexico due to problems with his heart. After retiring Grady continued to live in Clovis where he enjoyed working with Fruit trees in his yard and fishing, He was a great story teller and would pull an occasional practical joke on you. If he ever said “Do you remember” you knew you were about to hear a long story and it was well worth your while if you took time to listen.
He died of a Heart Attack on Nov 21st 1981 at the hospital of Cannon Air Force Base near Clovis, New Mexico. He was buried at Lawn Haven Cemetery in Clovis, NM.
